Center for Discovery has been providing residential and outpatient treatment for adults and teens for over 20 years. At Center for Discovery, we provide treatment for men and women with eating disorders, teens with eating disorders, teens with mental health disorders, and teens with substance abuse issues. Each of our locations is dedicated solely to one of our specialized treatment programs. I was admitted to this facility in february of 2020. I was at rock bottom of my eating disorder, experiencing a paranoid psychotic break, and at the start of a global pandemic. I was admitted to this facility in february of 2020. I was at rock bottom of my eating disorder, experiencing a paranoid psychotic break, and at the start of a global pandemic. I won’t lie, at first i really didn’t find it helpful. I wanted to leave, i didn’t like the program and i DEFINITELY hated the meal plan. As most people with eating disorders did (and do) in the program. As i started to become healthier, mentally more than physically, i really thrived here in this facility. My therapist and the staff who worked there at the time were the highlight of my day. I wouldn’t have been able to recover without Hannah Flemings incredible psychology skills, and the support of Aimee as a dietary tech/counselor. Chelsea always made me laugh and was an amazing person to be around. Rachel was always such a cool chick, and i loved the groups that all of the counselors ran. I truly believe that i would not be walking this earth anymore if it weren’t for the care and support that i received from Center for Discovery in Edmonds. I understand why there’s a lot of bad reviews here, mostly because it’s teenagers who received care from this facility who most likely didn’t want to get better or had bad experiences with some staff. But please don’t hesitate to send your children to this facility, they really do help people and i am a testimonial for that. I would give you guys 5 stars, but there is one staff member who still works there that left a really bad taste in my mouth. Kara was probably the absolute worst person to hire as a counselor. I don’t care if she was a social worker and has experience, she should never work in an eating disorder clinic. When i was there, she caused a client to sit out of a group and start crying because she had us do stretches and exercises that went beyond our movement level (which is dangerous, because we’re supposed to always have our head above our heart for cardiac safety). She was very pushy with me when i showed signs of anxiety, challenging me to stop stimming when it was my way of self soothing in a scary environment. When i expressed my dislike towards her, all of the clients agreed with me and felt the same. Even when i had another stay in the Bellevue adult facility, none of the clients there liked her either (and that was in 2022). Otherwise, everyone there is doing an amazing job at providing comfort and care to the clients, at least in 2020 when i was there.

I'm using different email but I went here in October of 2022 right after my birthday and was there until January 3rd. Katie Sarah Rachel rain they will be the best part of that place if you go. Yes it gets you medically stable but it won't get you mentally stable. I left miserable I was miserable the entire time. The kids there with me all agreed how bad it was and I would cause issues because I didn't agree with how things were going. If your child is okay with being treated as if there 3 and forced to do things they know isn't helpful to them then yeah this is the place for you. If you wanna be able to still live your life and be able to be happy I would try the most not aggressive thing first. Start with 3 days a week meeting for 3 hours. I wish I had started with that. I appreciate being able to eat again but it didn't cure me it won't cure anyone it honestly will just impact your mental health even more and not in a good way. But if Katie and rain see this I love you guys and thanks for making it easier at times.

As I sit down to reflect, this place was one of the worst experiences of my life.
I am not going to disclose what, but I have two eating disorders. One involves the thoughts about the way my body looks, coping skills, etc, and one does not. While everyone else was working on their recovery and their ED, I felt alone. So alone. I felt like the staff helped to an extent, and then I was just punished because I couldn't finish. No one helped me come up with new solutions. The stress got so intense that my body was rejecting food. And it's like, you can't improve, get discharged, or go home, let alone move up phases if you don't finish. It wasn't my fault, but I blamed myself. Also, this place does a horrid job at treating EDs in general. It's just a place to get medically stable, they don't treat any underlying things that involved eating disorders. In my opinion, they should not advertising treating non "conventional" eating disorders, because they barely helped me with mine. Since I have been home, I researched what treatment should've been like for my second ED. I don't feel like this place treated my second ED at all. I still struggle with it daily.
Staff do not know how to treat other mental health issues at all. Sure, it's an eating disorder treatment center, but it's also a mental health one. Most patients that come in have other mental health problems too. I was made out to be the bad guy, all because I was struggling. I started to get very angry towards the end of my stay because none of the staff we're listening to me, let alone my therapist. Staff were rude, touched us without asking, made comments about our bodies, and other things similar.
There were so many arguments between patients, and some of those things weren't even acknowledged. Their solution was to punish us all with house reset, and we were all told it was our fault. I believe they should've gone about this situation a different way. We were all just under high stress. I don't blame any of my peers, I blame staff and the way this place runs itself.
There is so much more I could mention, but that is some main stuff.
There were some good moments, but those feel outweighed by the bad.
In all, this place made me, and other patients, feel like a burden for struggling.
I think that this place has potential, I think that maybe staff should have more training or something.

The nurse nina is horrible at her job. she’s horrible at drawing blood and the least comforting person whenever i needed skin checks or was overwhelmed in one of her groups.
One of the therapists and head people Mara was horrible to us. She was so over controlling and it showed how little she cared about it. To her we were just a job that she needed to get over every day to make money. Everytime we expressed we felt we weren’t being treated well she would put us on “pause” for not being “recover focased” being put on pause meant you couldn’t go on any outings or recieve stamps for completing meals but the stamps were my only motivation to eating so it didn’t even help us want to be “recovery focased. Everytime we tried to participate in group and say anything other than what she wanted to hear it was just “our eating disorder voices being loud” She showed us an extremely triggering video in one of her groups and it led to several relapses. A client there spoke up before she showed the video and told Mara it was super triggering and she had seen it before but Mara didn’t listen and showed it anyway.
Chelsea seemed like she cares a lot but i never actually felt heard or seen around her. It was like she didn’t know what she was doing half the time. Anytime you reached out for support it was always “i’m sorry you feel that way” and that was the end of the conversation.
On a more positive note, Douglas and Hannah were the most kind, caring people i have ever met during treatment. Hannah always comforted me even though she didn’t work as often, everyone there always looked forward to seeing her. She always made me smile even on the hardest days and she showed how i was so much more than my eating disorder. She talked me through my problems and my thoughts and made all the super uncomfortable nursing things more fun because we knew they had to be done.
Douglas was one of the funniest and kindest staff there ever. I think about them and how they made me feel frequently. They took us on the outings and let us pick the music and always just vibed with us. They made the holidays feel better in res because it obviously wasn’t fun being there. They had really meaningful groups and always helped with coping skills and other things. They read us our zodiac sign day predictions everyday and told us if it was a “bones” or “no bones” day.
The therapist i had there was tess. She was so unhelpful during family sessions and didn’t ever want to listen to me and only my parents. She accused me of lying frequently which just led me to not want to open up to her anymore. She never made me feel like i could actually recover from my eating disorder.
The diet techs rachel and rebecca were some of the nicest people i have met. Rachel was so funny and she was like the best cook ever. I miss the meals she made us so often. Rebecca seemed so strict but once you got to talk to her about your feelings she was always there for you. She threw ice with you when you were mad, or let you cry to her when you were sad. She talked you through all your ed thoughts and never once judged you. I love them both so much.
Saer was only nice to his clients. I was not one of them so i only ever got their bad side. People were “shipping” me and another client and he believed them. People really liked him but i did not. One thing that was great about him is that he always stood up for you if someone misgendered you. He is so openly supportive of peoples genders and sexuality’s and was very helpful to get me to stand up for myself with that.
Kayla was a nighttime staff and everyone always was so excited to see them. I think they were a nurse because they always did vitals but i’m not too sure. They played cards with you, joked around when you needed it and was always there to cheer you up. I love kayla for their humor the most. They were just so funny and that was what really stuck with me about them.

I’ve been to CFD twice now, the first time being pre-pandemic. It went fine enough, I was there for 2.5 months and the staff were helpful. However, the second time I went was this January, and stayed for 3 months. I could tell immediately that the place has gone downhill.
It’s extremely short-staffed with many people being on-call. One of the on-call staff(Kara) was extremely rude to me and many other people (patients AND staff members). She was very disrespectful and inappropriate, and often abused her power. She was religious, and while I’m fine with that, I’m not fine with putting your religion on others. She prayed to people at night which was extremely awkward. Her meal-coaching techniques were triggering, she would say things like, “take a bite for ME.” Also, she turned off the fireplace while we were napping by it even when we weren’t doing anything, saying it “wasn’t allowed and we needed to stay awake.” She treated us like we were 5. Many of the “good” staff were planning on leaving, and many left while I was there. By the end of my stay (3 months) I disliked almost everyone working there.
Another staff member (Chelsea) has worked there for a long time. I feel like this is what caused her to treat us as if we were patients and not individuals. She was rude to us and didn’t really allow us to have fun. We couldn’t make jokes around her because she found everything offensive (light teasing to each other, even if the other person was fine with it). She would also slightly pressure me into checking in with her if I was upset, and then after telling her about my problems, she would say things like, “that’s tough. Have you tried a coping skill?” Not really taking the time to understand and relate to me.
The management was not good. The regional operations director was very strict and often unkind with staff. She fired people for disagreeing with her and then told us that they “left.” She was extremely unkind to someone for not showing up to work because of a traumatic experience. Also, many of the staff are underpaid for the work they do/did.
The dietician was very strict, and she often doubted us on genuine dislikes of food. I know it’s an eating disorder residential, but still. She wouldn’t let me choose milk as a dislike, saying I’ve “drank it before, so I must like it,” and I couldn’t have soy milk as an alternative. Going onto food, our portions were huge. I know I needed to gain weight, but the amount was beyond reasonable. I feel like they could’ve given us normal sized portions, and made up the extra calories in supplement so I would at least know how much I need to eat now. My idea of a normal amount to eat is disordered because of how much they gave me. She would also get upset or change your menu if you planned to have the same snack 2 days in a row.
The management did not handle problems within patients well. Some patients engaged in very triggering behaviors right in front of everyone else, and nothing was done to help it until late into my stay. Also, a patient had violent behavior, such as throwing things and making me feel very unsafe. Nothing was really done about it until later. When they threw a pencil at me and it almost hit my eye, I told Chelsea, she told me to “express my feelings about it” to the patient, and that she “couldn’t do anything about it because she didn’t see the patient throw the pencil.”
The staff would listen to my phone calls and tell my therapist if I said anything “concerning”, even if I was joking about things with my family, such as not going to PHP afterwards.
For the more positives, I liked my therapist Mariya. She helped me work through some of my problems, but I could tell she was a newer therapist and she should’ve had more experience before working here. She was also very “by the book” Not a bad thing, but not what I needed.
All in all, I do not like CFD’s methods and I’ll be surprised if they stay open for much longer. They helped me become medically stable, but that’s about it.
